Introduction ------------ First of all, let me just say that while all of these Custom Picture Controls were created by me, some were done using tone curves which I have found elsewhere. Some of the tone curves were modified in order to create the Picture Controls so I cannot take full credit for them. Other tone curves are of my own doing and contrived through experimentation. I cannot claim that they can be universally applied to just any image without some tweaking. Almost all Picture Controls were built using the stock Neutral Picture Control as a base. The exceptions are the ones based off Monochrome for B&W processing. All however were built using stock Base Picture Controls so there shouldn't be any dependency problems. IMPORTANT - INSTALL USING THE NUMERICAL FILE NAME !!! Installation for CaptureNX and ViewNX using the Picture Control Utility ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately, Nikon made this a bit cumbersome for those who want to share Picture Controls. The PCU is short-sighted in that it really only likes to deal with moving files back and forth between either a camera or storage card attached to the computer. So here's what you do. [0] Get a CF card and format it in-camera. [1] Use either the camera or a CF reader/writer to mount the card Using CF reader/writer ---------------------- [a] Remove the CF card from the camera [b] Insert CF card into the CF reader/writer Using camera ------------ [a] Ensure the camera's USB mode is set to MSS [b] Connect camera and computer using USB cable [2] Ensure the computer can see the contents of the card. [3] Create a folder/directory on the card called NIKON [4] Create a folder/directory on the card underneath NIKON called CUSTOMPC [5] Copy the Picture Controls into the /NIKON/CUSTOMPC directory. [6] Launch the Picture Control Utility. [7] Click on Import. [8] Now you can import the PCs into empty slots. When Nikon distributes their PCs, they create an installer which works a bit of magic behind the scenes to get things into the proper place. Unless you want to play with writing an installer, the above method will probably have to suffice. Likely there's some "secret" location these files might be placed in order for Capture NX, View NX and the PCU to immediately recognise them but I haven't had the time to go hunting. I do know that under Windows, Nikon's Optional Picture Controls (note that this is different than Custom Picture Controls) installer will place the NOP files in \Program Files\Common Files\Nikon\Picture Control Utility but I'm not sure an analogous location exists for Custom Picture Controls. Installation for Picture Control enabled cameras (D300 example) --------------------------------------------------------------- The procedure for installing to the camera is similar to that of installing through the PCU for use by ViewNX and CaptureNX. The only difference is that after you copy the NCPs to your card, you insert the CF into your camera and use the camera's built-in Picture Control management utilities to install them. So basically, you will need to grab a CF card and create the following directory structure under the root directory of the card: NIKON | +-- CUSTOMPC Here's the step-by-step... [0] Insert a CF card into your CF reader/writer. You probably want to use a cleared off card. You can use a formatted card (in-camera or otherwise) if you want. [1] Open the card with some sort of file management utility. [2] Create the following directory on the card: /NIKON/CUSTOMPC That is to say that you need to create a NIKON folder at the top level of the card and then a CUSTOMPC folder underneath the NIKON folder. [3] Place all your NCPs inside /NIKON/CUSTOMPC but make sure to use the numerically named ones. [4] Remove the card from your computer and insert it into the D300. [5] Load the Picture Control to your camera. [a] Shooting Menu -> Manage Picture Control -> Load/save -> Copy to camera [b] Select a Picture Control from the card and press Ok. [c] Select one of your available slots to put it in. [d] Rename the Picture Control if you want to. [6] Repeat step 5 for each Picture Control you want installed.
